Mac Setup

General usability

  • Tap to click:
    So much neater!
Settings > Trackpad > Point & Click > select “Tap to click”
  • Unnatural Scrolling:
My brain can’t do “natural” scrolling.
Settings > Trackpad > Scroll & Zoom > unselect “Scroll direction: Natural”

Apps

Dev setup

  • Terminal:
Open the terminal app, and select the dock icon option to keep it in the dock.
  • Terminal niceness:
    Install oh-my-zsh.
I like having the full path to the current directory on my command prompt. If you want the same, edit the file .oh-my-zsh/themes/robbyrussell.zsh-theme to replace the c in the prompt addition with a tilde (~), then source ~/.zshrc to start using your new prompt:
#PROMPT+=’ %{$fg[cyan]%}%c%{$reset_color%} $(git_prompt_info)’
PROMPT+=’ %{$fg[cyan]%}%~%{$reset_color%} $(git_prompt_info)’
  • Homebrew:
Install the package management system Homebrew.
  • Install Joe:
Install Joe’s Own Editor (Laura’s favourite editor, ymmv).
    > brew install Joe
  • Python:
Install pyenv, and use pyenv to install one of the python3 options and make it default. In my case, I installed python 3.9.1.
    > pyenv install 3.9.1
    > pyenv global 3.9.1
Here is a nice pyenv tutorial.
  • virtualenv:
    > pip install virtualenv
  • git:
    > brew install git
Then use git config to set your user details.
