South African Elections 2024: Voter Turnout
Some analytics on the South African 2024 election data.
The data is available on the IEC data download portal and on the News24 election map.
First let’s look at the voter turnout data(*), available for download on the IEC data download portal.
First thing to note — 60 voting districts with greater than 100% voter turnout. How? Presumably Section 24a votes? Can we find a way to check if that as the case? Maybe by looking at the relative number of National versus Provincial votes (for a future post!)
Note that you can scroll across the table to see all the columns.
What does the overall voter turnout look like, per province?
Highest turnout in KZN, lowest in the North West Province. But not a good turnout in general.
Where were the highest (but <100%) and lowest voter turnouts?
Highest:
Lowest:
What was happening in these voting stations? Anyone know them? 211 voters turning up out of 2906 registered is pretty bleak.
What is the typical number of people registered at a voting district? Let’s check it per province:
On average ~200 voters per voting district in Gauteng and the Western Cape. Much lower for the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Northern Province. I suppose that makes sense, that areas with more rural spread-out populations may need smaller, more spread-out voting districts.
But still - the Eastern Cape does have a lot, relative to its population.
That’s it for now — next up, analysis of results!
